Configuring Mac OS 8/9

 

This article walks through setting up TCP/IP and Remote Access (PPP in older versions) to connect to TOAST.net.

 

What version of the Mac OS do you have?

In order to configure your machine properly, you must first know the version of the OS that your currently have. If you already know the version, click here to continue. To find out, do the following:

  1. Close all other programs or make certain that you are on the Finder.

  2. Click on the Apple icon in the upper left hand corner of the screen and select About this computer.

  1. A window will appear displaying information on your machine. Near the top, the OS version number is displayed.

 

Configure the connections

  1. Click on the Apple icon, Control Panels, and select TCP/IP.

  2. Enter the following information:

  • Connect via -- PPP

  • Configure -- Using PPP Server

  • Starting domain name -- leave blank

  • Ending domain name -- leave blank

  • Addition Search domains -- leave blank

  • Name server addr. -- leave blank if your OS is version 8.6 or higher. If you have a Mac with OS 8.5 or lower, use the table below for the entries:

 

Primary DNS:205.133.7.2
Secondary DNS:206.244.186.1

 

 

  1. Close TCP/IP and save the setting changes.

  2. Click on the Apple icon, Control Panels, and select Remote Access (or PPP).

  3. Enter the following information:

  • Name -- your TOAST.net username

  • Password -- your TOAST.net password

  • Save password -- should be checked if you want it to remember your password

  • Number -- your TOAST.net access number

  1. Click the Options button.

  2. Under the Protocol tab, check the following options:

  • Use protocol -- PPP

  • Connect automatically when starting TCP/IP applications -- checked

  • Allow error correction and compression in modem -- checked

  • Use TCP header compression -- checked

  • Connect to a command-line host -- not checked

  1. Click on the Connection tab.

  2. These options are purely up to the user, but we recommend that Disconnect if idle for 10 minutes and Prompt every 5 minutes to maintain connection should not be checked.

  3. Click OK to save the settings.

  1. Click Connect to dial into TOAST.net, or close the window to save the setting changes.
